Vitamin C - the anti-ageing all-rounder in the skin care

Vitamin C is often called an anti-aging vitamin, because it supports the skin in essential functions against aging and contributes in various ways to a healthy and beautiful skin. The vitamin C used in cosmetics has three beneficial effects on the skin:

First, it is known as an effective antioxidant that combats free radicals and thus counteracts premature aging of the skin and thus protects against oxidative damage.

Secondly, vitamin C plays a major role in building up collagen, which gives the skin its structure and firmness. A healthy collagen structure in the skin helps to slow down the visible aging process.

The third aspect has been known for a long time, the brightening effect of Vitamin C that helps to fight hyperpigmentation (e.g. age spots) as well as acne, which makes the complexion more even.

Vitamin C as an antioxidant

Free radicals develop in the body constantly. This happens in metabolic processes, but also environmental influences such as UV radiation, air pollution, lifestyle stress and cigarette smoke lead to an excessive amount of free radicals.

Physically, these unstable molecules are always looking for a reactant and therefore attack the cell membrane, lipids and proteins. In order to prevent the free radicals from doing this in the skin or harming the entire organism, thus impairing their functionality, it needs antagonists - the so-called antioxidants. Only they can neutralize the free radicals and thus stop the premature aging. Other well-known antioxidants include vitamin A and E or Q10 and the OPC's (oligomeric proanthocyanidines) and Resveratrol (both occur in red grapes).

A network of collagenous, elastic fibers give the skin firmness and elasticity. If deep wrinkles are clearly visible on the face, then the collagen structure in the skin is no longer strong enough and breaks in at the points where the wrinkles become visible.

Vitamin C protects the existing collagen structure from damages by free radicals. In a second step, it supports the skin in the rebuilding of collagen and the production of new collagen as well as the strengthening of elastic fibers in the extracellular matrix of the skin.

So, Vitamin C helps the skin to create a stable and healthy collagen network that can better withstand tension without being damaged so easily. The skin’s structure is significantly improved and the surface appears significantly more firm and smooth.

Vitamin C for pigmentation and acne

Vitamin C may also help with increased pigmentation / hyperpigmentation. Studies show that vitamin C inhibits the excessive formation of melanin and thus also reduces the development of age spots. This whitening effect of Vitamin C on the skin has been known already for centuries and it has been used to make the skin brighter.

The antioxidative effect of vitamin C also reduces inflammation and this way also helps with acne, relieving micro-inflammation in the skin, caused by acne. Oxidation processes also spread acne in the skin and vitamin C is able to stop it.
